8th Grade Math

8th Grade Math focuses on the transition from doing arithmitic to algebra.  We study a wide variety of topics in 8th grade.  The topics covered are as such:  Rational Numbers, Functions, Exponents, Ratios, Proportion, Similarity, Geometric Relationships, Measurement, Equations, Graphing Lines, and Linear Functions.

Each day the students will be given an assignment worth 5 points, that is due two days later.  An example would be an assignment given on Monday is due on Wedsday.  This is to allow students to ask questions on the day before it is due.  In each chapter, there will normally be two quizzes ranging from 15-25 points each.  At the end of each chapter there will be a chapter test worth 100 points.  I also have a worksheet package that we complete throughout the year linking math to everyday situations.  These worksheets are usually done on Fridays, and are done in pairs.  The object of these worksheets is to let students wind the week down, using math to solve everyday problems, with a partner.  These worksheets are usually worth 15-20 points.  When a quarter is all said and done, their daily work is worth 50% of their grade, and tests and quizzes make up the other 50%.
